From Solidarity to Strategy: African Trade Unions Step Up

In April 2026, trade unions, rider representatives, and organisers from across Africa gathered in Nairobi to strengthen collective action on platform work. Supported by FES TUCC, the meetings highlighted the urgent need to organise platform workers and advance protections in one of Africa’s fastest-growing yet most precarious sectors.

As platform work expands across the continent, workers continue to face low incomes, long hours, limited social protection, and increasing algorithmic control. The Nairobi meetings marked a decisive shift from fragmented struggles to coordinated action, strengthening the collective voice of platform workers and trade unions across Africa.
