From Dialogue to Power: Advancing a Worker-Centred Just Transition in Africa

Despite sustained economic growth in many African countries, structural transformation, decent work, and social justice remain elusive.

The ITUC-Africa New Year School 2026 highlighted the urgent need for Africa’s transformation to be worker-led, justice-driven, and rooted in democratic participation. Discussions centred on Just Transition as a strategic pathway linking climate action, industrialisation, and social justice, while emphasising the role of the Advisory and Advocacy Group (AAG) in strengthening African coordination in global climate negotiations. The School also signalled a strategic shift for trade unions—from observers to agenda-setters—in shaping policies on climate governance, industrialisation, and social protection across the continent.
